I’ll let you in on a little secret. I wanted to be Hype Williams when I grew up. But Little X now know as just X became his protege instead of me. Whomp Whomp. Point being, I have always love a good video. I would listen to songs and imagine how I would make the video. Worst transition from song to video ever? i’m glad you asked. it was Aaron Hall’s “I Miss You” what the hell was that about? Whose idea was that? It was terrible, and could not be further from the damn song, but I digress.

Anyhoo, a week or so ago I saw a great music video from an artist I would have otherwise not paid much attention to. Young Thug’s “Wyclef Jean” what the hell the song has to do with Wyclef I don’t know, but hey. Anyhoo the director Ryan Staake turned his lemons to lemonade and i suspect this video came out way better than it would have if it had gone as planned.

Basically, Young Thug didn’t show while the clock was running not just the clock the cash as well. Staake gave a play by play of what he wanted what happened and what he decided to do to resolve his dilemma. What he produced was ingenious. I’m 1000% sure this video would have been run of the mill and forgettable if Thugger had shown up so thank goodness for small favors.

While I watched this video I reminisced about a time when video budgets were one million dollars and 10 minutes long. When Puff made “Been Around the World” and Jay made “Big Pimpin” and well when Michael Jackson Michael Jacksoned. I mean his videos would come on broadcast television! “Remember the Time” do you remember? Iconic!

I’m hoping this mishap turned gift to us ushers in thoughtful and innovative videos. I know independents are giving us that, but I need a filter. So much to sift through.

Also I want to acknowledge the video references a truly vile but good film “Requiem For a Dream” If you haven’t seen it I do recommend it, but I will say I found it to be a one and done meaning a movie I will never watch again and I feel like I could smell the movie. It’s good though, but just vile. I appreciate a quality movie reference.
So shout out to the directors who can turn words into pictures and pictures into video.
